Leonardo as quoted in the fabulous Controversy Article 2000

Fame is a monster on its own and you have no control over it. You really donīt. And even if you try and fight it, it just feeds the fire sometimes. So Iīm of the opinion that Iīm going to let my work and what I put into it speak for who I am. And then any other assumptions about me can just be made on their own. Iīve got a life to live and a career to build. I canīt be worried about that stuff. Iīm not a kid any more, so I donīt have time for childish things.

Teen Giant Poster Mag, 1998

You tend to play unused characters (The Basketball Diaries, Marvinīs Room, Whatīs Eating Gilbert Grape?) or romantic types (Romeo & Juliet). Do you take a lot of time deciding which roles to take?

Definitely. The thing is, I really donīt want to become a mainstream movie star, and even with Titanic I was weary at first because James Cameronīs other films included The Terminator and True Lies, which were a bit more action packed than simply acting. But Titanic turned out well. You know I turned down the part of Robin in Batman Forever. I like deep, complex characters to tackle - Iīm really not interested in being a star...

Meryl Streep,
Dec 15,1996,
Toronto Sun, Jam! Showbiz

"It's not a question of forcing anything -- ever," she advises. "It's a question of letting go of everything, except what you want in the scene.

Some people are willing to do that all the time. Diane (Keaton) is and Robert (DeNiro) is, and Leonardo is -- so I was the lucky one."

As for the new star that is DiCaprio, Streep is enthusiastic, in a big sister, tolerant mother sort of way.

"He's just a genius actor -- pure untameable talent," she enthuses, a rolling of her eyes adding volumes. "I love that he was learning, 'cause that's how I feel too."

She's not just talking about acting -- she's talking about life.
